Everyone Needs A Modern Day Mary

Updated: Jul 25, 2022

“Dear Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”-John 2: 4-5

I remember the phone call that I received from my Area HR Manager. “Are you ready?” were the words that rang on the other side of the phone. With a voice of anticipation and nervousness, I responded with a “Yes.” She proudly read me my offer letter while I sat in shock. After working a total of almost 3 months away from home, staying in hotel to hotel, and tackling unimaginable employee relation issues, the time had finally arrived for my unexpected promotion. I was offered the position of the Human Resource Manager for one the largest home improvement retailers in the world and offered more money than I had ever made in my growing HR career. Now that I reflect on this great opportunity, I realized that my Area HR Manager was my "Modern Day Mary."

In the scripture referenced above, Mary said something so profound that stood out to me, “Do whatever he tells you.” Jesus’s mom pushed him into his destiny. When Jesus’s mom approached him about an issue that he could have very well handled, his initial response was, “Dear Woman, why do you involve me. My time has not yet come.” Indeed, it was his time, and Mary’s total belief in Jesus’s capability to handle the situation helped to propel him forward. She could have easily backed down and said, “Ok, well if you aren’t ready, you aren’t ready.”

There are instances in our lives when we feel as though we are not ready and our time has not yet come. Those reasons of doubt may arise from a lack of confidence, lack of time, and the list can go on. My Area HR Manager could have easily picked up on the nervousness in my voice and second guessed my ability to do the job or even presented the opportunity to someone else. However, she believed in me enough to give me the opportunity that set the stage for the rest of my entire HR career. I sincerely believe that we all need a "Modern Day Mary" who sees us beyond where we currently are and provides us with that once in a lifetime opportunity that propels us into our destiny!
